NuVet Plus® Ingredients

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is another of the several powerful antioxidant ingredients in NuVet Plus®.   Unlike human beings, dogs and cats can manufacture their own vitamin C in their intestines.   So if they manufacture their own vitamin C, why add more to their diet?   Because vitamin C is one of the water-soluble "stress vitamins" that are quickly depleted when your pet is under stress.   And what can cause stress?   Our pets live in the same modern world that we do.   Separation anxiety from long owner absences during the workday causes stress. So do boredom, noise and pollution.   Any illness, receiving anesthetic or changes in normal routine can cause stress.   Chemical preservatives in food (ethoxyquin, nitrates, nitrites and sodium benzoate) increase the detoxifying demands on vitamin C stores.

Vitamin C is water-soluble and quickly washed out of the body.   Excess vitamin C is eventually safely excreted in the urine.   In fact, vitamin C is sometimes given for that express purpose, to acidify the urine in response to feline urologic syndrome.

In addition to its protective antioxidant properties, vitamin C is essential for the formation of collagen and connective tissue.   It is required for normal intercellular matrices in teeth, bones, cartilage, connective tissue and skin.   It is important for the structural integrity of capillary walls.   It aids in fighting bacterial infections, interacts with other nutrients and has been shown to protect the circulatory system from fat deposits.

Vitamin C is a key factor in many immune functions, including white blood cell function and interferon levels. Due to it's antioxidant properties it combats the effects of free radicals while lowering the risk of cataracts.   It also promotes growth and tissue repair.
