Oyster Shell

Oyster shell is extremely rich in calcium, which is vital for the growth and maintenance of bones and teeth. Calcium is essential for maintaining a regular and health heartbeat.   Practically every cell in the body relies on calcium to function properly.   Those include heart, nerves and muscles. Calcium is involved in the digestive process, activating digestive enzymes like lipase.

The maintenance of calcium levels becomes extremely important for dog and cat breeders.   Low calcium levels during labor and nursing and can result in a life threatening condition known as eclampsia.   This can lead to convulsions and death unless immediate countermeasures are taken.

Some experts recommend higher levels of calcium in order to prevent bone loss.   The heart requires calcium to maintain a normal beat.   Muscles need it for contraction and relaxation, and calcium is essential for blood to clot and for the nervous system to function properly.

Over time, if enough calcium not is consumed, the body takes calcium from the bones to keep the heart and muscles working properly.   This process will gradually weaken the bones until they break more easily.
