Whey is the liquid portion of milk that
is left over when the coagulated curds are separated,
usually in the process of cheese making. We all
remember Little Miss Muffet eating her curds and whey!
Whey Protein is used as a concentrated
source of high quality animal-based protein. Whey
Protein is a high quality source of calcium and
lactotalbumin (a milk-specific protein). It is also a
rich source of immunoglobulins, proteins that function
within the immune system.
A steady dietary supply of high
quality animal protein is extremely important for cats.
Unlike dogs, cats are classified as "obligate carnivores",
meaning they require animal protein in their diets.
Whey protein is an excellent choice for high quality animal
protein.
High quality animal protein is
critical for building and maintaining muscle mass in cats.
Proteins are called "the building blocks of life" and they
are involved in virtually every bodily function. Many
cat foods are actually low in high quality animal protein,
regardless the percentage of protein appearing on the label.
Lower quality plant proteins are frequently added to cat
foods in order to raise the total protein value. Plant
proteins are generally incomplete and do not provide the
correct mix of essential amino acids required by felines.
Corn gluten meal is an example of a lower quality plant
protein source commonly added to cat foods.
Protein deficiency can lead to
retarded skeletal and muscle growth. It can result in
a weakened immune system with the resulting susceptibility
to infections and disease. |
