Alpha Amylase

Alpha amylase is an important digestive enzyme that acts on cellulose fiber and other carbohydrates, particularly starches.

NuVet Plus® contains several herbal ingredients with important phytochemical properties.  These phytochemicals are often protected within the plant's cell walls, which are primarily constructed of cellulose fiber.

Because dogs and cats are carnivores, their digestive systems haven't evolved the ability to break down the cellulose in plant material.  This is particularly true with cats, which are considered to be "obligate carnivores.  Without Alpha Amylase, many of the herbal ingredients in NuVet Plus® might pass undigested through your pet's system.

Alpha amylase helps enhance the absorption of herbal remedies and the release of phytochemicals into the digestive system.  Alpha Amylase also facilitates the digestion of other carbohydrates, particularly starches.  Cornmeal and rice are two common carbohydrate-rich ingredients commonly found in pet food today.  Though they are concentrated and inexpensive sources of energy, dogs and (particularly) cats tend to digest them poorly.

The Alpha amylase in NuVet Plus® can help your pet to better assimilate the nutrition in their daily food ration.  Older pets can particularly benefit from digestive enzyme supplements.
