Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is known as the "King of Plants". Its roots have been used in herbal remedies for centuries in
many cultures. This herb belongs to the legume family,
closely related to beans and peas.
Alfalfa is an excellent source of vitamins A, B-6, D, E, and
K. It is also high in beta-carotene, fiber, chlorophyll,
digestive enzymes and protein. It is especially rich in the
amino acid tryptophane.
As a source of minerals, alfalfa provides calcium,
magnesium, phosphorous, iron, potassium and several trace
minerals.
Alfalfa is known as a tonic for the digestive system. It can
help stimulate the appetite and aid digestion. Alfalfa can
also help reduce joint pain and inflammation due to
arthritis, rheumatism or canine hip dysplasia. Additionally,
alfalfa can help ease urinary problems, especially where
there is crystal formation and bladder irritation.
Alfalfa is excellent as a general tonic for any dog, helping
to improve their physical and mental vigor. It is
particularly recommended for dogs that are underweight,
nervous, high-strung, suffering from joint pain or urinary
problems.
Note: Alfalfa is not included in NuVet Plus Feline Formula®. There is suspicion regarding the safety of daily alfalfa
supplementation for cats. This herb contains coumarin, which
is a phytochemical with many medicinal uses. The coumarin
content in alfalfa is considered to be quite safe for most
species. Cats, however, are especially sensitive.
